2/16/07 NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAM
ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING WAS HELD TUESDAY FEB 20 AT 7:00 PM AT CLUBHOUSE
Petty crime can happen anywhere in the city and Bayshore is no exception. The exciting news is that we have the ability to reduce crime in our neighborhood by getting together with a few of our close neighbors and starting a Neighborhood Watch. Between 2002 and 2006, five thousand burglaries were reported, but only three were in Neighborhood Watch areas. Pretty amazing!
It is easier than you might think! So how do you get started?
1) Choose a small area of your neighborhood, such as a culdesac where everybody can see each other or a short length of street where the neighbors can reasonably watch each other's homes.
2) At least 50% of those neighbors fill out a home inventory (photos, serial no's, etc.) of valuables in their home that they keep in a safe place. If you have 8 homes in your area, only 4 would have to complete the inventory.
3) The nice folks at Neighborhood Watch come out and give a quick scan to see that inventories are complete and then give those neighbors special stickers to put on their home letting other know that valuables have been marked with identifiers.
4) You get to choose where to place your very own Neighborhood Watch road sign!! It is that easy!!!
What is Neighborhood Crime Watch? The Anchorage Police Department Neighborhood Crime Watch program is one of the most effective and lease costly ways of reducing and/or preventing residential property crimes. It is a citizen involvement, neighborhood and community based effort designed to assist citizens and the police in reducing crime and increasing an overall sense of peace, safety and security in the neighborhood. Link to more info
How else can it help neighbors?
You can make a neighborhood program work for you. It can include more than just crime watch. You can include such things as:
- Emergency preparedness
- Citizen initiatives (i.e. better street lighting, snow removal, sidewalks)
- Homeland security
- Watching out for elderly neighbors
- Vacations (make sure someone shovels driveway, picks up newspapers, puts footprints in snow as if someone is coming and going)
Please visit the Neighborhood Watch website or call your Bayshore General Manager for more information. Don't wait!! Call today!!!
